A comparative study of inducing initial artificial enamel caries Lesions

Abstract
Objective: This study examined whether Carbopol 980, 941, Carbopol ETD 2050 and carboxylmethyl cellulose could be used as substitutes for Carbopol 907.

Methods: The demineralization effect of Carbopol 980 (0.2%), 941 (0.2%), Carbopol ETD 2050 (0.2, 0.5%) and carboxylmethyl cellulose (1.0%) were compared with that of Carbopol 907. The specimens of bovine teeth enamel were embedded in resin, polished with grinding paper (# 60, 240, 600, 4,000 grit) and divided randomly into 6 groups. Each group had 12 specimens that were standardized according to the Vickers hardness number (VHN). The specimens were immersed in each demineralization solution for 72 h. Surface microhardness was measured using a Vickers hardness tester. Lesion depth and fluorescent intensity were also measured in the enamel by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM).

Results: The differences in surface microhardness (VHN) before and after demineralization treatment were significant between groups. Carbopol 907 showed the largest demineralization effect for surface microhardness, whereas Carbopol 980 (VHN: 243.3¡¾6.2) showed no significant difference from Carbopol 907 (VHN: 260.0¡¾5.0). In addition, lesion depths after deminer alization treatment by CLSM were deep with Carbopol 907, but there was no significant difference with Carbopol 980. Carbopol 907 had the best demineralization effect between the groups, and Carbopol 980 also showed a good demineralization effect like Carbopol 907. Carbopol 941, Carbopol ETD 2050 and carboxylmethyl cellulose were not as effective as Carbopol 907 and Carbopol 980.

Conclusion: Carbopol 980 can be used as a substitute for Carbopol 907 to induce artificial enamel caries lesion.
